Abstract

Introduction: SMEs represent the most abundant segment of the business fabric in Latin America. The growing academic literature on their development reflects the increasing attention they receive in the areas of innovation, sustainability, and competitiveness. Objective: Identify the bibliometric and scientific production in Latin America regarding the development of SMEs during the period 2018–2025. Methodology: 899 documents were collected from Scopus (database). Indicators of production, co-authorship, impact, and keyword co-occurrence were analyzed, supported by visualization tools such as VOSviewer. Results: A steady increase in publications on SMEs is evident, with a high concentration in a small core of journals. The most relevant co-authorship networks are found between Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia. Dominant themes revolve around innovation, quality management, sustainability, and competitiveness. Conclusions: There is a growing interest from the Latin American academic community in strengthening SMEs. Nevertheless, challenges remain regarding the quality and international diversity of collaborations in publications, presenting future opportunities for SME research in the region.
